House renovations: Part Six

Upstairs, the staircase opened up directly into a loft style bedroom with another smaller room off of it.  This would be the master bedroom.

Coming from our tiny little apartment, it seemed huge.

Being such an old house, there had originally been no closets.  Previous owners had tacked one in the corner of this room.  It was awful.

We decided that it had to go.  We patched filled in the missing paneling where it had been (cheaper than tearing it all out!) and also framed in the duct work from the new heat pump.  Which also meant we could remove the old electric baseboard heaters.

The floor was in pretty bad shape, so we decided to go ahead and refinish it, along with the room next door.  That was a dirty job, but worth the effort!

We learned our first lessons on mitered corners in this room, patching in all the original baseboards to match (we stole some from the room next door, which we planned to use as a closet...) and adding a crown molding at the ceiling.  It took days.

A coat of paint , and it was ready!

It's funny how much smaller it seems now: Steve's office moved up here when the downstairs bedroom became James' room/the playroom.  We've added a few pieces of furniture over the last couple years (like an actual bed!) Right now I'm saving for real nightstands.

I love our room.

We made a tri-fold screen out of 1x1 furring strips, an old shower curtain, and some hinges.  It only cost about $14, and does a wonderful job of hiding all the wires and clutter in "Steve's corner".  It's the one part of the house that I am not allowed to tidy.  Sometimes I just can't resist, but I try.
